Factory System - Essay Example The Factory System as it is known today when we refer to the onset of the industrial age of modern day England was the use of machinery for mass production (Boyson, 1970, pp. 34 - 52). Former cottage based industries or rather production that took place in the homes, cottages, hut (any form of residence of the workers) or any type of production that took place prior to the 1780s were moved to a centralized location that came to be known as a "factory". This was mainly caused due to the introduction of machinery for the production and manufacture of goods at the turn of the nineteenth century and since machines were too large to be housed in cottages of the workers and since it was too costly to provide each worker with an individual machine and also since several workers were necessary to operate one machine alone, the only option that was left to owners of the machinery were to house the machinery in a large buildings and have the workers manufacture the products in the "factory" un der the strict supervision of the machinery owners or supervisors who were hand picked by the owners (Thompson, 1967, pp. 81 - 93). Due to this centralization of labour and machinery, there was much migration from the villages to the industrial hubs in the country and thereby began the "factory system". And this migration from the village to the cities or the industrial centres were apparent in the early part of the nineteenth century The Impact of the Factory System on the Labour The onset of the factory system had many different impacts on the labour force, these impacts were both good and bad. By bringing workers under one roof it was easier for owners to supervise and manage the manufacture of products, they were also able to ensure that work was not duplicated and it was carried out in the most efficient manner possible. Also it was the factory system that was the cause of the development of modern day management theory through the studies that were carried out by individuals like Fredrick Taylor and others. By bringing labour under one roof the owners were able to discipline the staff appropriately and especially they were able to ensure that productivity was high, therefore as owners of the machinery they stood to gain a great deal. In the case of the workers the benefits and disadvantages that they faced were quite mixed. While the factory system gave them a steady income, living in such close quarters with so many different individuals, living in unsanitary conditions as the big cities turned out to be due to the convergence of workers and working in very unhealthy environments that were often inadequately lit up and ventilated caused much disease and also created an unsafe environment where workers were often prone to succumb to fatal accidents. Economic Factors During the economic growth, the automobile industry was also growing, and FordÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s business expanded rapidly, and the demand for their products increased as people could afford luxury goods. During these times, customers could afford more so Ford was bringing out newer more expensive models. During the recession, Ford sold off its subsidiaries to cut its losses. As the customers had less money, they will buy less, so Ford reduced the numbers of cars it was produced. Political Factors The government created a new scheme where people could scrap their old cars for cash, and have money for a new car. This helped Fords make a number of sales in the recession other Political factors that influence the strategic planning of Ford motor since government laws and regulations are concerned with the production of more eco-friendly automobiles. Due to the environmental concerns, the industry has to abide with the regulations aimed at reducing the pollution levels. When the recession ends, FordÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s sales will rise due to people spending their money on luxury goods that donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t affect the environment as badly. Legal Factors In the future, there will be new laws that will raise the minimum wage, which will change many pay schemes of FordÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s employees which will reduce its annual profits and may force it to change its business approach. For example, Ford may have to change its suppliers to cheaper options to combat the losses it will have due to the wage rise. Social Factors If society changed, and driving eco-friendly cars became a global trend, this would mean that Ford would have to design and produce a new model of car to join in on the profits of this trend. The problem with this is that the sales of other Ford models would suffer as they will seem old fashioned and unfriendly on the environment. To combat the losses they will get on their older models, they will cut production levels by a high a percentage of even entirely to stop the losses.

Why Do Butterflies Gather Around Puddles

On sunny days after a rain, you may see butterflies gathering around the edges of mud puddles. What could they be doing? Mud Puddles Contain Salt and Minerals Butterflies get most of their nutrition from flower nectar. Though rich in sugar, nectar lacks some important nutrients the butterflies need for reproduction. For those, butterflies visit puddles. By sipping moisture from mud puddles, butterflies take in salts and minerals from the soil. This behavior is calledÃ‚ puddling, and is mostly seen in male butterflies. Thats because males incorporate those extra salts and minerals into their sperm. When butterflies mate, the nutrients are transferred to the female through the spermatophore. These extra salts and minerals improve the viability of the females eggs, increasing the couples chances of passing on their genes to another generation. Mud puddling by butterflies catches our attention because they often form large aggregations, with dozens of brilliantly colored butterflies gathered in one location. Puddling aggregations occur frequently among swallowtails and pierids. Herbivorous Insects Need Sodium Herbivorous insects like butterflies and moths dont get enough dietary sodium from plants alone, so they actively seek other sources of sodium and other minerals. While mineral-rich mud is a common source for sodium-seeking butterflies, they can also procure salt from animal dung, urine, and sweat, as well as from carcasses. Butterflies and other insectsÃ‚ that get nutrients from dung tend to prefer the dung of carnivores, which contains more sodium than that of herbivores. Butterflies Lose Sodium During Reproduction Sodium is important for both male and female butterflies. Females lose sodium when they lay eggs, and males lose sodium in the spermatophore, which they transfer to the female during mating. Sodium loss is much more severe, it seems, for the males than for the females. The first time it mates, a male butterfly may give away a third of its sodium to its reproductive partner. Since the females receive sodium from their male partners during mating, their sodium procurement needs arent as great. Because males need sodium, but give so much of it away during mating, puddling behavior is much more common in males than in females. In one 1982 study of cabbage white butterflies (Pieris rapae), researchers counted only two females among the 983 cabbage whites observed puddling. A 1987 study of European skipper butterflies (Thymelicus lineola) found no females puddling at all, although 143 males were observed at the mud puddle site. The researchers studying European skippers also reported the area population consisted of 20-25% females, so their absence from the mud puddles didnt mean females werent in the vicinity. They simply didnt engage in puddling behavior the way the males did. Other Insects That Drink from Puddles Butterflies arent the only insects youll find gathering in mud puddles. Many moths use mud to make up their sodium deficits, too. Mud puddling behavior is common among leafhoppers, too.
